Okinawa: Typhoon Dolphin is expected to continue tracking westward on Thursday, according to forecasts by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
The storm was moving west towards Japan’s Okinawa prefecture at a speed of 20 km/h (12.4 mph) as of 0100 GMT on Thursday, the JMA said.
Dolphin, known as Typhoon No. 13 in Japan, is expected to affect the country’s southwest on August 7 and August 8.
Airlines including Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways have already announced flight cancellations impacting travel to Okinawa and the southern Amami islands on Friday and Saturday.
The powerful typhoon made its closest approach to the Ogasawara Islands, located about 1,000 kilometres south of central Tokyo, on Tuesday (August 4), with maximum sustained winds near the centre of 45 meters per second and maximum gusts of 60 meters per second, while power outages were reported on Chichijima and Hahajima.
